10 - GOLFO ARANCI
Golfo Aranci is a municipality in Gallura of about 2500 inhabitants. Its name derives from the Gallura "Gulfu di li Ranci", Gulf of Crabs, and is therefore the result of a misinterpretation in the process of Italianization by cartographers in the service of General La Marmora in 1839.
The municipal territory is situated on the north-east coast of Sardinia, and appears as a tongue of land in the middle of the sea. The economy of Golfo Aranci is mainly based on tourism, which has grown exponentially also thanks to the proximity of the Costa Smeralda and the marine area of Tavolara, and on fishing which has always been practised.
The area on which Golfo Aranci rises was anthropized since the Nuragic age, as demonstrated by the sacred well of Milis, dating back to the VII-VI century before Christ. For its physical conformation it became a commercial seaport since Roman times. Underwater finds dating back to the 3rd century B.C. were found in the seas of Cala Moresca.
About twenty beaches of all kinds are scattered throughout the municipal territory, from the most equipped for tourist reception to the wildest and most isolated ones. Among others, the beach of Sos Aranzos, the Bianca beach and that of Marinella.
The naturalistic richness of the area makes Golfo Aranci an ideal destination for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, but also for hiking and trekking in an oasis where you can observe the mouflons that here have habitats or rare species of birds.
In Golfo Aranci, off the Third Beach, there is the suggestive MuMart, the Museum of Underwater Contemporary Art, and the Mizar Submarine, from which you can appreciate an open sea aquarium.
In the municipality of Gallura there is the international dolphin research centre Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (Institute for Applied Dolphin Research) which hosts researchers from all over the world to participate in educational projects.
One of the most heartfelt events is the celebration of the Assumption, in Mid-Agust, the day on which the famous fish festival is traditionally held.
Golfo Aranci boasts a whole range of attractions, including:
- The church of San Giuseppe;
- Caddinas Bay;
- Protected reserve of Cala Greca;
- Cala del Sonno.
- Cemetery of the English people.
