16 - BOSA
Bosa, almost 8,000 inhabitants, is the main centre of the historical region of Planargia. It is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It is situated in the centre-north of the Sardinian west coast, on the banks of the river Temo, the only navigable river in Sardinia.
There are traces of human settlements already in prehistoric and protohistoric times, evidence of which are 36 funerary caves found in various places in Bosa territory. In the surroundings of the town you can also reach the Domus de Janas of Coroneddu and the hypogeic necropolis of Chirisconis.
The actual urban agglomeration began to be built in medieval times, on the left bank of the Temo, where the Church of San Pietro (extra muros), in Romanesque style, was also built in 1073. After the construction of Malaspina Castle, however, most of the population moved to the right side of the river, and on the left side almost only the church remained.
The Castle of Malaspina, also known as the Castle of Serravalle, owes its name to the Tuscan family who had it built in the second half of the 13th century. The building is located on the heights of Serramanna hill, and can be reached by a long and steep staircase. The castle is surrounded by a 300-metre long wall and guarded by 7 towers. In the parade ground of the castle there is the Church of Nostra Signora de Sos Regnos Altos, inside which you can admire a series of frescoes from the 14th century.
During the Pisan period, for the defense of the territory from the Saracen invasions, some coastal towers were built along the west coast of Sardinia, aimed at sighting and signalling the threats coming from the sea. In the surroundings of Bosa you can see five of them: that of Foghe, that of Ischia Ruggia, of Columbargia, of Punta Argentina and Torre dell'Isola Rossa, situated on an island overlooking the mouth of the Temo, and connected to the mainland since 1869.
Bosa is an important tourist destination, thanks to its 40 kilometres of coastline and suggestive beaches that plunge into a crystal clear sea. The village is characterized by typical pastel coloured houses, wrought iron balconies and narrow alleys that cross each other up to the riverside, where there is also the Ponte Vecchio.
You can walk among ancient tanneries and workshops where coral is worked or asphodel baskets are woven.
Bosa boasts a whole series of attractions, including:
-Church of the Immaculate Conception, city Cathedral;
-Museum of the Conce;
-Sa Funtana Manna, 19th century monument in red trachyte;
-Biomarine Park of Capo Marrargiu;
-Natural reserve of Badde Aggiosu.
