24 - BAUNEI

Baunei, about 3,500 inhabitants, is the municipality of Ogliastra that occupies the entire southern part of the Gulf of Orosei.
An area inhabited since Neolithic times, there are many archaeological finds: 120 settlements dating back to the Nuragic age, 20 tombs of giants and 5 temples of worship.
The area consists of narrow valleys, streams that flow into the Tyrrhenian Sea and alternate with steep limestone walls, cliffs, coves, dolines and karst valleys. Panoramas that make Baunei a perfect place for lovers of trekking, hiking, climbing and caving.
The territory of Baunei has ancient and unchanged landscapes. 40 km of coastline, with cliffs overlooking the sea and few beaches that can be reached by land only through more or less steep mule tracks.
Among the various naturalistic Baunei's attractions, there is Su Sterru, the deepest karst chasm in Europe. The mouth of the chasm is about 400 metres above sea level and descends, after an almost vertical jump, for 295 metres.
Around Su Sterru there is a legend, according to which a monster, Scultone, similar to a dragon, terrorized the inhabitants of the area, killing anyone who crossed his eyes. It was St. Peter who defeated him, taking him by the tail and knocking him repeatedly to the ground. The ground gave way under the weight of the monster that sank into the abyss.
The myth of Su Sterru was filmed in an episode (The Mystery of the Nuraghe) of the famous comic Martin Mystere.
One of the best known natural sites in the territory of Baunei is the Stone Mask, or Lithic Face. It is a basaltic wall 10 meters high, known for its amazing anthropomorphism. The particular shape is the result of weathering erosion on the rock block. Rain and wind have traced, digging into the stone, the features of a human face, with eyes, nose and lips defined almost in detail.
Another element of identity is certainly the "Grotta 'e Janas", a domus dating back to the fourth millennium, overlooking the town and consisting of a pavement in which rock carvings are depicted. There are 18 examples of gullies that branch out from a main basin and culminate towards terminal cupels. The arrangement and shapes of these engravings refer to several examples spread throughout Europe and in particular in Piemonte and Liguria, demonstrating consolidated links with the land beyond the sea.

Baunei has a whole series of attractions including:
- Cala Goloritzè;
- Cala Mariolu;
- Cala Luna;
- Cala Sisine;
- Ethnographic History Museum;
- Church of Santa Maria di Navarra.
