28 - TACCHI DELL'

OGLIASTRA

Ogliastra is the central-eastern province of Sardinia, an area inhabited by man since the Neolithic age, rich in archaeological and naturalistic attractions of all kinds.

From an archaeological point of view you can admire in this province Menhir (or Pietre Fitte), Domus de janas, Tombs of giants and Nuraghes (about 250).

What makes the whole area particularly fascinating are the geomorphology of the territory and the presence of vast areas completely untouched by human presence. The coastal areas are still intact and consist mostly of cliffs falling sheer to the sea. The beaches (the most famous ones: Cala Goloritzè, Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu) can only be reached on foot or by sea with the boats leaving from the nearest marinas.

The territory of Ogliastra is sprinkled with the so-called Tacchi d'Ogliastra, natural monuments consisting of calcareous-dolomitic mountains, whose name derives from the similarity with the heels of shoes. The municipalities where there are more heels are Ulassai, Osini, Gairo and Ussassai. The most famous heel is that of Perda 'e Liana, in the municipality of Gairo. It is the the most famous natural monument in Sardinia, and rises up to 1,300 meters above sea level. Legend has it that it was one of the gates to hell, from which devils and witches came out, or to which one had to go to offer one's soul to the devil to become

rich.

Among the other heels, the one of Monte Tisiddu (Ulassai) and Tacco di Texile (Aritzo) should be mentioned. This one has a height of 975 meters above sea level, a maximum width of 70 meters and a relative height of 24 meters. Its peculiarity is to be wider at the top than at the base.

Other naturalistic attractions in Ogliastra include the Grotta Su Marmuri, one of the largest in the whole of Sardinia, and the natural waterfalls of Lequarci. To visit all the heels and other attractive sites there is a network of well-traced and signposted paths to cross on foot, by bike or on horseback. Excursions can be organized throughout the year.
