SAN PANTALEO

Dolianova is a municipality of about 10,000 inhabitants of lower Campidano. The municipality was born on June 25, 1905 from the fusion of the two villages of San Pantaleo and Sicci San Biagio, which still today remain the two patrons.

The economy of the village is mainly based on olive growing, wine production and sheep and goat cheese making. The territory on which Dolianova stands was called Pars Olea by the Romans, to underline the importance of olive tree cultivation even then.

Already in prehistoric times the area was abundantly anthropized, as shown by 120 pre-Nuragic and Nuragic sites in which numerous artefacts have been found, preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.

The main attraction of the town is certainly the Church of San Pantaleo, one of the best preserved examples of Romanesque-Pisan architecture in the whole Sardinian panorama.

The building stands on an early Christian place of worship, as shown by the 5th century baptismal font preserved in the presbytery, and on the remains of an early medieval church (10th century).

San Pantaleo is 30 metres long, 13 metres wide and 15 metres high. The facade and bell tower are decorated with pilasters and arches with added geometric decorations and mythological motifs. The building, built in sandstone, has a trinavata longitudinal plan with only one apse. The wooden roof is probably the result of a variation of the original project, as indicated by the strong cross-shaped pillars, suitable to support even a heavy stone vault.

Inside you can admire the capitals decorated with scenes from the New Testament and the medieval frescoes in the apse. In particular the Tree of Life and the Retablo of San Pantaleo.

The retable is composed of six paintings: in the centre there is a Madonna del Libro and a representation of the medical saint performing miracles, on the sides there are scenes of his martyrdom in 305.

Dolianova boasts a whole series of attractions, among which:

- Nuraghe Sa Dom'e s'Orcu;

- Tomb of the Giants Su Tiraxiu;

- Church of San Biagio;

- Church of Santa Maria;

- Villa de Villa;

- Museum of the oil tradition sa Mola de su Notariu.
