9 - VERMENTINO

Vermentino is a vine whose origin is quite uncertain. The most reliable hypothesis is the probable Spanish import, in fact, it is assumed that it spread from the fourteenth century first in France and Corsica, finally in Italy and precisely in Ligura (Pigato its local variety), in Tuscany, Lazio, Puglia, Umbria and Sardinia, or rather Gallura where the vine acquires the final name of Vermentino.
Currently for Sardinia, only in Gallura there are Vermentini DOCG (Controlled and guaranteed designation of origin) while some examples of DOC (Controlled designation of origin) can be found for example in the Alghero area. The DOCG wines produced in Gallura come from vines of the following municipalities: Aggius, Aglientu, Arzachena, Badesi, Berchidda, Bortigiadas, Budoni, Calangianus, Golfo Aranci, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Luogosanto, Luras, Monti, Olbia, Oschiri, Palau, Sant'Antonio di Gallura, San Teodoro, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Telti, Tempio Pausania, Trinità d'Agultu and Viddalba.
Gallura is by nature particularly suitable for this plant for various factors:
geological - subsoil of granitic origin, coarse-grained sand and absence of clay, to guarantee a balanced permeability.
agronomic - soils rich in potassium and minerals with good acidity.
climatic - temperate climate and rainfall concentrated on narrow time zones favour this plant.
geographical - the areas near the sea or immediately inland are fundamental factors for the growth of these vines, areas where other vines would be affected by the salty winds. It also prefers hilly terrain (no higher than 500 m above sea level) and well exposed to the sun.
Today Sardinia produces two thirds of the entire national production of Vermentino, therefore a consolidated tradition and economy of this wine is now established on the island.
One of the requirements for Vermentino della Gallura DOCG is that it is made from a minimum of 95% Vermentino grapes and a maximum of 5% non-aromatic white grapes.
The yield of Vermentino is in a range between 90 and 100 quintals per hectare.
The fruit is white berry, in clusters of medium size, cylindrical or pyramidal in shape. The berries, spheroidal in shape, slightly elongated, and with spotted skin have a colour that varies from amber-yellow to greenish-yellow, depending on the degree of exposure to the sun.
The wine produced from each vine, vinified in purity, has very precise organoleptic characteristics, whose colour is straw yellow with greenish reflections. It has a delicate aroma and a dry, bitterish flavour on the palate, a characteristic that intensifies as the wine ages.
It is a wine that goes perfectly with fish dishes.
